17-Mile Drive

Coastal Drive · Pebble Beach, California

The 17-Mile Drive is a private toll road looping through the gated Del Monte Forest community of Pebble Beach, linking Pacific Grove and Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula. It is about 17 miles if you follow the whole loop, though most visitors drive only the coastal stretch with its marked stops: Spanish Bay, Bird Rock, Seal Rock, Cypress Point Lookout, the Lone Cypress, Ghost Tree and the Pebble Beach Golf Links. You pay a per-car fee at the gate, and some of it has been refunded against a purchase at certain restaurants - confirm the current rule. The scenery is genuine: wind-bent cypress, granite points, sea lions and surf. The drive is also short on surprises and crowded on summer weekends, so treat it as a two-to-three-hour scenic loop rather than a full day. Fog is common. Weekends and summer afternoons bring slow traffic at every pull-off, so go on a weekday morning if you can. Confirm fees, gate hours and the rules for bikes and motorcycles before you go, and decide in advance whether a resort meal is worth the refund.

The road is open in daylight only, generally from about sunrise until around sunset, with gates at Pacific Grove, Carmel, the Highway 1 entrance and other points staffed or monitored through the day - confirm the exact opening and closing times on the official Pebble Beach site, because they shift with the season. Golf tournaments, concours events and private functions have closed parts of the route or limited access for several days at a time, mostly in the summer and around the August car week. Storms and fallen trees can shut a section without notice. Lodge, restaurant and shop hours inside the resort are separate from the road and vary by day, so check them if the toll refund matters to you.
