Aalborg and Lindholm Hoje
North Jutland'S City On The Limfjord, With The Utzon Center, Kunsten Art Museum And A Lively Waterfront, And Lindholm Hoje, One Of Scandinavia'S Largest Viking Burial Grounds, With Stone Ship Settings · Aalborg, North Denmark Region
Aalborg is Denmark's fourth city and the capital of North Jutland, a former industrial port on the Limfjord that has reinvented itself around a long waterfront promenade, bold modern buildings and a compact old centre of half-timbered merchant houses. Across the fjord in Norresundby lies Lindholm Hoje, one of Scandinavia's largest Viking-era burial grounds, where hundreds of graves and stone ship settings lie on a grassy hilltop, preserved for centuries under drifting sand. In one or two days you can walk from the 17th-century Jens Bang house and Budolfi Cathedral to the Utzon Center, the last building designed by Jorn Utzon, the Sydney Opera House architect, who grew up here; see Kunsten, the art museum by Alvar Aalto; and spend the evening on Jomfru Ane Gade, the famous bar street. The honest caveat: Aalborg is roughly 4.5 hours from Copenhagen, the burial ground is best understood with the museum beside it, and Jomfru Ane Gade on a weekend night is loud and rowdy rather than charming.
