Aarhus and ARoS

Denmark'S Second City, With ARoS Art Museum And Its Rainbow Panorama, The Open Air Town Museum Den Gamle By And Moesgaard · Aarhus, Central Denmark Region

Aarhus is Denmark's second city, a young, walkable university town on the east coast of Jutland that packs in some of the country's best museums. Its landmark is ARoS, a large modern art museum crowned by 'Your rainbow panorama', Olafur Eliasson's circular glass walkway in every colour of the spectrum, which lets you walk a loop above the rooftops and see the city tinted red, yellow, green and blue. A short walk away is Den Gamle By, an open-air museum of old Danish townhouses rebuilt street by street, with costumed staff and newer quarters showing later decades. South of the city, Moesgaard Museum holds the Grauballe Man, an Iron Age bog body preserved in startling detail, under a sloping grass roof. In between are the cafes of the Latin Quarter, the tall cathedral, the redeveloped harbour front and the free harbour bath. The honest caveat: Aarhus is excellent for museums and food but it is not an old-world showpiece, and the rainbow is busy on rainy days and at weekends.
