Abant Lake
A Small Mountain Lake Ringed By Pine And Beech Forest, With A Loop Trail Of About 5 Km, Horse Drawn Carriages, Picnic Lawns, Cabins And Hotels, And Strong Autumn Colours. A Favourite Weekend Escape From Istanbul And Ankara, Busy In Autumn And Snowy In Winter · Mudurnu, Bolu
Abant Lake sits in a pine and beech forest in the Abant Lake Nature Park, about 30 km south-west of Bolu and roughly 200 km east of Istanbul, at around 1,300 m (confirm). The lake formed behind a landslide, and its still water mirrors the trees, which is why autumn is the famous season, when the slopes turn copper and gold and weekend traffic from Istanbul and Ankara fills the access road. A path of about 5 km circles the shore through the forest, with picnic lawns, tea houses, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles for hire and a scatter of hotels and cabins. Winter brings snow and a quiet white shoreline, spring brings wet green forest, and midsummer stays cool when the lowlands are hot. The lake is for looking, walking and picnicking rather than swimming, and the loop itself is the reward. Go on a weekday if you can, bring a layer for the damp air, and use the water as the start of a longer day through the Bolu mountains and the old villages around Mudurnu.
