ABBA The Museum

The Interactive Museum Of The Pop Group ABBA, With Costumes, Gold Records, A Recording Studio Mock Up And Sing Along Booths, Beside Grona Lund On Djurgarden · Stockholm, Stockholm County

ABBA The Museum opened in 2013 on Djurgarden in Stockholm, in a modern building right beside the Grona Lund amusement park, and tells the story of the pop group that won Eurovision in 1974 with Waterloo and went on to sell records in the hundreds of millions. It is less a museum of glass cases than a place to join in: you can sing on stage alongside the four members as holograms or avatars, mix a song in a mock-up of their studio, try on digital versions of the costumes and dance in karaoke booths, with your performances saved to your ticket to watch later. Real objects are here too - stage costumes, gold records, instruments, a piano linked to Benny Andersson's own and a telephone said to ring only when a band member calls. People come because the songs are known everywhere and the building is a short walk from the Vasa and Skansen. The honest caveat: it is joyful for fans and quite thin for anyone who is not one, and in summer it is crowded with coach groups and hen parties, so timed tickets sell out.

Djurgardsvagen 68, Djurgarden, Stockholm, Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden

Open every day for most of the year, with longer hours in summer (roughly late June to August) and shorter hours the rest of the year, sometimes with a later opening on weekdays in winter - check the current schedule, and confirm closures around Midsummer Eve, Christmas and New Year. Entry is by timed ticket, bought in advance on the museum's own website; in summer and on winter weekends the popular slots sell out days ahead, and walk-ups may find nothing left until late afternoon. The museum is cashless - it is card or online only, and cash is said to be refused outright, so confirm before you go. Getting there: the Djurgarden ferry from Slussen lands at Allmanna Grand, about two minutes' walk away; tram 7 runs from the city centre along Strandvagen and stops close to Grona Lund; or walk about 25-30 minutes from Stureplan along Strandvagen and over the Djurgarden bridge. Both the ferry and the tram run on normal SL tickets.
