Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park

National Monument · Hodgenville, Kentucky

The 1808 Sinking Spring Farm outside Hodgenville where Abraham Lincoln was born in February 1809, marked since 1911 by a neoclassical memorial building of granite and marble reached by fifty-six steps — one for each year of his life. Inside the memorial stands a one-room log cabin long presented as his birth cabin; it is symbolic rather than original, and the Park Service now says so plainly. The park also holds the Boyhood Home unit at Knob Creek, ten miles away, where Lincoln lived from the age of two and which he remembered as his first home.
