Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University

Natural History · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Founded in 1812, the oldest natural science research institution in the Americas, and the place where in 1868 a Hadrosaurus skeleton from New Jersey was mounted upright on an armature — the first time anyone anywhere had stood a dinosaur up for the public to walk around. Its collections run to millions of specimens and are a serious research resource; its public floors are a family natural history museum with dinosaur halls, dioramas from the 1930s that are themselves period pieces, and a walk-through butterfly house.

1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19103, United States

Open most days, generally 10 AM to 5 PM, with reduced weekday schedules at some times of year and closure on major holidays — verify before travelling. Butterflies! is included with admission. Live animal presentations run on a posted daily schedule.
