Acadia National Park
National Park · Bar Harbor, Maine
Forty-nine thousand acres along the mid-coast of Maine - about half of Mount Desert Island, part of Isle au Haut, the tip of the Schoodic Peninsula and sixteen smaller islands. It was the first national park east of the Mississippi and remains the only one in the north-east, and it was the first ever created from private land given to the public. Cadillac Mountain, the tallest on the Atlantic coast of the United States, stands in the middle of it, and forty-five miles of carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. run through it with no cars on them at all.
25 Visitor Center Road, Bar Harbor, Maine, 04609, United States
Open year round, 24 hours. AN ENTRANCE PASS IS REQUIRED, valid seven days, and America the Beautiful passes are accepted. ⚠ A SEPARATE VEHICLE RESERVATION IS REQUIRED TO DRIVE THE CADILLAC SUMMIT ROAD in season - it is booked on recreation.gov, it is NOT the same thing as your park pass, and sunrise slots go within minutes of release. Most facilities and the Park Loop Road are seasonal; winter closes much of the road system and the free Island Explorer shuttle does not run.
