Acadian Historical Village
A Living History Village Of About Forty Relocated And Restored Buildings On The Acadian Peninsula, Depicting Acadian Life From 1770 To 1949 The Period After The Deportation, When Acadians Returned And Rebuilt · Bertrand, New Brunswick
Between 1755 and 1764 the British deported the Acadians - around ten thousand people removed from what is now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, families split across the Atlantic seaboard and shipped to France, in the event they call LE GRAND DERANGEMENT. What is less told is what happened next: THOSE WHO SURVIVED CAME BACK, to poorer land on the northern and eastern coasts, and rebuilt. THE ACADIAN HISTORICAL VILLAGE IS ABOUT THAT RETURN. Around forty buildings, most of them relocated from across the Acadian Peninsula and restored, are laid out as a working settlement covering 1770 to 1949, with costumed interpreters in French farming, fishing, milling, printing and keeping house exactly as the period requires. It opened in 1977. This is the largest and most serious presentation of Acadian history anywhere, and it is a living culture rather than a vanished one.
14311 Route 11, Bertrand, Acadian Peninsula, Bertrand, New Brunswick, Canada
SEASONAL. THE FULL LIVING-HISTORY PROGRAMME - costumed interpreters, working trades, animals and the restaurants - RUNS ROUGHLY EARLY JUNE TO LATE SEPTEMBER, daily, with a shorter shoulder programme at each end. OUTSIDE THAT PERIOD THE VILLAGE IS CLOSED. ADMISSION HAS RUN ROUGHLY CAD 20-25 PER ADULT with family rates and children cheaper, and a ticket has commonly been valid for two consecutive days - worth knowing, because the site is large and one day is a rush. INTERPRETATION IS PRIMARILY IN FRENCH, which is the point, and staff switch to English readily. THE HOTEL CHATEAU ALBERT, a reconstructed 1907 hotel on site, takes overnight guests in period rooms. CHECK THE SEASON DATES AND RATES before travelling; the Acadian Peninsula is a long way from anywhere.
