Acapulco
Puerto HistóRico / Destino De Playa · Acapulco, Guerrero
Acapulco invented the Mexican beach holiday: a deep curved bay under green hills where Hollywood came in the 1950s, the Kennedys honeymooned and the name became shorthand for glamour. Long before that it was the American end of the Manila galleon, the ship route that linked Asia to the Americas for 250 years, and the star-shaped Fuerte de San Diego tells that story. At La Quebrada, divers still leap about 35 metres into a narrow rock inlet, timing the swell, as they have since the 1930s. In October 2023 Hurricane Otis, which grew to category 5 in about twelve hours, wrecked much of the city and its hotel stock, and recovery has been slow and uneven. Guerrero carries a serious travel advisory, so check current state travel advice, fly rather than drive and stay in the busy tourist zones. The bay is still beautiful, prices are low and the food, especially Thursday green pozole, is excellent. Confirm any hotel is fully reopened before you book.
