Iowa's amusement park, at Altoona just east of Des Moines, with more than a hundred rides, shows and attractions across a dozen themed areas. Its roller coasters are the reason enthusiasts come: five in total, including two wooden coasters and a double-looping steel one. It is a regional park rather than a national destination, and it is a full day for a family from anywhere in Iowa or the neighbouring states.

⚠ SEASONAL — roughly May to early October, and running WEEKENDS ONLY at each end of the season rather than daily. CHECK THE OPERATING CALENDAR BEFORE TRAVELLING; arriving in late April or mid-October to a closed park is the standard mistake. Adult admission is typically about $40-$60 depending on date, materially cheaper bought online than at the gate, with reductions for children and afternoon tickets often available; season passes pay for themselves in about two visits. ⚠ PARKING IS CHARGED SEPARATELY and is not included in admission. ⚠ THE WATER PARK IS INCLUDED — bring swimming things. Height restrictions are enforced at each ride queue rather than at the gate, so measure children before travelling and get a measured wristband at guest services on arrival.
