Aero and Aeroskobing

Island South Of Funen Known For Aeroskobing, One Of Denmark'S Best Preserved Small Market Towns, Bathing Huts On The Beach, A Seafaring Past In Marstal And Gentle Cycling Roads Between Thatched Villages · Aeroskobing, Region of Southern Denmark

Aero is a small, low island south of Funen, roughly 30 km long and a few km wide, reached only by ferry. Its main town, Aeroskobing, is often called one of the best-preserved small market towns in Denmark: cobbled lanes of low, brightly painted 18th- and 19th-century houses with hollyhocks by the doors, a church, a tiny harbour and almost no modern building in the old core, because the town was bypassed by industry and railways. Across the island, Marstal is a working seafaring town whose sailors once crewed schooners around the world, with a large maritime museum; Soby in the west is a ferry and fishing port. Between them run quiet roads through thatched villages, fields, cliffs and beaches lined with colourful bathing huts. People come to slow down: to cycle, to stroll the old town in the evening, to swim, and to stay a night or two. The island is also known for foreign couples marrying at its town hall. The caveat: getting there takes most of a day from Copenhagen, ferries in summer can be full for cars, and outside the season many cafes and shops close.

The island of Aero, south of Funen, from Aeroskobing to Marstal and Soby, Aeroskobing, Region of Southern Denmark, Denmark

Aero is an island, so it is always open; what matters is the ferry timetable. Car and passenger ferries run several times a day all year from Svendborg to Aeroskobing (roughly 70-75 minutes), and from Fynshav on Als and from Faaborg to Soby (roughly 60-70 minutes each) - confirm the current routes and sailings, which thin out in winter. Car spaces in summer, on Fridays and around Danish holidays must be booked ahead; foot passengers and cyclists rarely need to. Museums in Aeroskobing and Marstal are usually open daily in summer and on reduced days, often closed Mondays or several days a week, in winter - check the current schedule. Many cafes and some shops close or cut hours from October to April.
