Agawa Canyon is a deep, rail-only wilderness gorge of the Agawa River in the Algoma highlands, about 183 km north of Sault Ste. Marie in northern Ontario. No road reaches it, so the only way in is the Algoma Central Railway, which runs a day tour train from the Sault through forest, lakes and rocky cuts to the canyon floor. The train stops for about 90 minutes (confirm) so passengers can walk to waterfalls, climb to a lookout above the gorge and picnic by the river. The Group of Seven painters worked in this country in the 1920s, and the scenery that drew them is the reason for the ride. The line is famous for autumn colour, with the peak commonly in late September and early October, and those dates sell out early, so book ahead. Early summer brings black flies, winter trains run on some dates (confirm), and the walking on the canyon floor is easy. Because the train is the only access, a missed return signal is a real problem, so watch the clock.
