Agguttinni Territorial Park
Nunavut'S Largest Territorial Park At About 15,570 Square Kilometres, Established In 2022 On Eastern Baffin Island; Fjords, Icecaps And Glaciated Mountains Reaching The Davis Strait, With No Facilities Of Any Kind · Clyde River, Nunavut
Agguttinni was established in 2022 and at about fifteen thousand five hundred square kilometres it is NUNAVUT'S LARGEST TERRITORIAL PARK - larger than Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay combined. It covers a stretch of eastern Baffin Island north of Clyde River where the land is entirely mountain, icecap and fjord: glaciers running down to the sea, walls of rock rising straight out of the water, and an interior of ice that has never been systematically travelled. The park was created through the Nunavut land use planning process WITH THE COMMUNITY OF CLYDE RIVER, whose members hunt, travel and camp across it, and Inuit use of this coast goes back thousands of years. THERE IS NO INFRASTRUCTURE OF ANY KIND - no facilities, no trails, no staff, no signs - and there is no scheduled way in. Visitors travel by boat or snowmobile from Clyde River with local guides, or not at all.
Eastern Baffin Island, north of Clyde River, Qikiqtaaluk Region, Clyde River, Nunavut, Canada
THERE IS NO GATE, NO STAFF, NO FACILITIES AND NO SCHEDULED ACCESS OF ANY KIND. THIS IS A VERY NEW PARK AND IT IS BARELY DEVELOPED - infrastructure and visitor arrangements are still being worked out with the community. TWO PRACTICAL SEASONS EXIST: SUMMER, roughly LATE JULY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, when boats can work the coast; and LATE WINTER AND SPRING, roughly APRIL TO JUNE, when snowmobile travel over sea ice is how people actually move here. ACCESS IS FROM CLYDE RIVER, reached by scheduled flight from Iqaluit, AND TRAVELLING WITH LOCAL INUIT GUIDES AND OUTFITTERS IS BOTH THE ONLY PRACTICAL ROUTE AND THE INTENDED ONE. Everything is carried in and out. Weather governs all movement. Contact the Government of Nunavut's parks division and the Clyde River HTO well in advance.
