Agua Azul and Misol-Ha
ÁRea Natural Protegida / Ejidos · Tumbalá, Chiapas
Two waterfalls sit on the jungle road between Palenque and San Cristobal. Agua Azul is not one fall but hundreds of cascades stepping down travertine terraces for kilometres, and it is only blue in the dry season: in the rains the river turns the colour of milky coffee and the photographs stop making sense. In 2018 its flow collapsed for weeks and the terraces stood nearly dry. Misol-Ha is a single 35-metre curtain dropping into a round pool, with a path that runs behind the water into a cave, and it appears in the film Predator. Both are community-run, with ejido entry fees commonly MXN 30-100 (roughly USD 2-6) each, and Misol-Ha is about 35 minutes and Agua Azul about 1.5 hours from Palenque. Chiapas has had road blockades and informal collection points on these roads, so check current state travel advice, ask locally on the morning and drive by day. Most visitors take a Palenque day tour for roughly MXN 400-700 (USD 22-38).

⚠ BOTH FALLS ARE RUN BY LOCAL EJIDOS WITH THEIR OWN ENTRY FEES and keep daylight hours; the cave behind Misol-Ha charges a small extra fee. ⚠ AGUA AZUL IS ONLY BLUE IN THE DRY SEASON, ROUGHLY MARCH TO MAY - from June to October it runs brown, and its flow collapsed for weeks in 2018. ⚠ SWIM ONLY IN MARKED POOLS - THE CURRENTS BETWEEN TERRACES HAVE DROWNED PEOPLE. ⚠ THE PALENQUE-OCOSINGO ROAD IS THE MOST BLOCKADED IN CHIAPAS - ask on the morning; informal community road collections on the approach have long occurred. Tours from Palenque combine both falls. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
