Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park

State Park · McArthur, California

Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park lies in Shasta County in the Fall River Valley, near the small towns of Fall River Mills and Burney, and it can be reached only by water. There is no road in. Visitors launch a canoe, kayak or small boat from the Rat Farm boat launch and paddle across to the shore near Big Lake and Ja-She Creek - confirm the exact route and landing. The reward is a young volcanic landscape: jagged black basalt lava flows that meet clear, cold spring water bubbling up at the edge. The name Ahjumawi is usually explained as 'where the waters come together', from the language of the Achomawi people - confirm. It suits fit paddlers, anglers and campers who want quiet and who bring all their own water and supplies. Be honest about the limits: no services, no reliable cell signal, sharp rock, summer heat, wind on open water, rattlesnakes and biting insects. Allow a full day or a night or two.

Boat Access Only, McArthur, California, 96056, United States

The park has no gate, so a boat landing is possible at any hour, and day use is normally understood as sunrise to sunset - confirm the current rules with California State Parks. There is no ranger kiosk at the shore and no staffed entrance, so check whether any rangers are present, whether boat-in camping needs a reservation or a permit, and whether any seasonal closures apply before you drive out. Entry has traditionally been free, though camping may carry a fee - confirm. The Rat Farm launch is outside the park and has its own parking and access rules. Weather, wind and smoke from summer wildfires can make a crossing unsafe, so be ready to cancel on the day.
