Air Mobility Command Museum

US Air Force Field Museum Of Airlift And Air Refueling, Housed In A Restored Second World War Hangar On The Edge Of Dover Air Force Base · Dover, Delaware

The Air Mobility Command Museum sits on the southern edge of Dover Air Force Base, in a restored Second World War hangar and on the grass beside it. It tells the story of the planes that carry things rather than drop them: cargo aircraft, transports and air-refueling tankers, the side of air power that moves troops, supplies, relief aid and the wounded. The collection runs to about three dozen aircraft, most parked outdoors in an airpark, from the C-47 and C-54 of the Second World War and the Berlin Airlift to the C-124 Globemaster II, C-133 Cargomaster, KC-97, C-130, C-7 Caribou and C-141, and an early C-5A Galaxy, one of the largest aircraft ever built. Inside the hangar are restoration projects, engines, uniforms and exhibits, and some aircraft are opened for walk-throughs on certain days. The working base is right next door, so C-5M and C-17 jets often land and take off over the fence. Admission has been free, the volunteers are often veterans who flew or fixed these aircraft, and the museum has its own entrance off Route 9, outside the secure base.

The museum has typically opened Tuesday to Sunday during the day and closed on Mondays and on federal holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day; confirm current days and hours before you go, because a Monday or holiday visit finds the gate shut. It is not seasonal, but the outdoor airpark is partly weather-dependent: in lightning, high wind, snow or ice the aircraft rows may be closed while the hangar stays open. Aircraft interiors, including the big C-5A, are opened for walk-throughs only on certain days and when volunteers are available, so if climbing inside matters to you, ask ahead. The museum sits outside the secure area with its own entrance off Route 9, but access rules at military bases can change with security conditions, and photo ID may be requested for the airpark or flightline area; confirm current rules. Special open days, veterans' events and occasional base-related closures happen through the year; check the museum's own announcements before a long drive.
