Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum

Specialty Museum · Portage, Michigan

The Air Zoo is a large aircraft and science museum in Portage, just south of Kalamazoo off I-94, roughly midway between Detroit and Chicago. It mixes a serious collection of historic aircraft with indoor rides, flight simulators and hands-on science galleries, which is why it works for families as well as aviation enthusiasts. Expect WWII fighters and bombers, a Cold War section, a space gallery and an SR-71 Blackbird, a high-speed reconnaissance aircraft that is the star for many visitors. A restoration area lets you see aircraft being rebuilt. It is entirely indoors, so it is a good wet-weather or winter choice. Allow half a day to a full day, more with children, and pace the day so rides do not eat the aircraft halls. Admission levels, ride inclusion and hours vary, so confirm them before you go. Parking is on site, and it suits ages from toddlers to retired pilots, with lunch available inside.

The museum is generally open most days of the week through the year, usually with morning to late-afternoon hours and a later start or earlier close on Sunday and some weekdays. It is typically closed on a few major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Hours change by season, school holidays and special events, so confirm the current schedule with the museum before travelling. Some simulators and rides open later or close earlier than the galleries, and the restoration viewing area may not be staffed every day. Plan to arrive early for a full day, because the last entry is normally some time before closing.
