Aisha Bibi and Babaji Khatun Mausoleums

Karakhanid Funerary Architecture Of About The 11th 12th Century, With Carved Terracotta Panels In Thirty Different Patterns, Said To Be The Tomb Of A Young Woman For Whom The Legend Names It. Among The Best Surviving Early Islamic Brickwork In Central Asia. · Taraz, Jambyl

Aisha Bibi and Babaji Khatun are two small brick mausoleums of the Karakhanid period, roughly the 11th to 12th century, standing in a landscaped enclosure about 18 km west of Taraz in Jambyl region. The Aisha Bibi tomb is the better known: its walls are covered in carved terracotta panels in about thirty different patterns, stars, interlaced bands and floral borders, and it counts among the best surviving early Islamic brickwork in Central Asia. Local legend says a young woman named Aisha travelled far to marry the ruler Karakhan and died of a snakebite on the way, and that he built the tomb for her. Treat that as legend, not recorded history. Be honest about the scale. This is a small site and an hour is plenty, so it is a stop on a trip to Taraz and not a reason to cross the country. Parts have been restored, so ask what is original. Taraz itself, the old Talas of the Silk Road, adds a museum and other tombs to the day. Confirm access and any fee locally.

There are no fixed opening hours that can be given with confidence. The enclosure is normally open in daylight, commonly from the morning to the early evening, with a caretaker or guard on site on most days, and it is usually quieter and cooler before midday in summer. Days and hours can change with the season, holidays and restoration work, so confirm with your hotel, a Taraz taxi driver or a local guide before you go. Allow daylight for the drive back to Taraz, because the road west is dark and thinly signed at night. In winter the site can be muddy or snowy and shorter days apply. Treat any time quoted here as a range and ask on the day.
