A French Colonial Village On The Rim Of An Extinct Volcano'S Flooded Crater, Settled In 1840 Just As New Zealand Became A British Colony, Keeping French Street Names And A Harbour Where The World'S Smallest And Rarest Marine Dolphin, The Hector'S Dolphin, Can Be Swum With On A Boat Trip From The Wharf · Akaroa, Canterbury

Akaroa is a French colonial village on Banks Peninsula, about 1.5 hours from Christchurch, set on the rim of an extinct volcano's flooded crater that now forms one of the most sheltered natural harbours on the South Island's east coast. Settled in 1840 by French colonists just as New Zealand became a British colony, the town kept its French street names - Rue Lavaud, Rue Jolie - and a small cluster of colonial cottages and churches that give it a genuinely distinct feel from most other South Island towns. The harbour is home to the Hector's dolphin, the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin species, found only in New Zealand waters, and boat trips from the town wharf offer a realistic chance to swim with or watch them in the wild. The crater's steep green walls rise straight from the water on both sides, and the winding road over the peninsula's saddle gives sweeping views before dropping into the township. A gallery and craft scene, several seafood restaurants and a small summer cruise-ship trade sit alongside the harbour's quieter working-boat character most of the year.

Akaroa's township streets, wharf area and harbour lookouts have no gate and are open at any hour. Shops and galleries along the main street generally run 9am or 10am to 4pm or 5pm, with reduced days and hours common in winter, when several close altogether on quiet weekdays. Dolphin swim and harbour cruise operators run fixed daily departures, typically between 10am and 2pm depending on tide and season, and some swim tours pause entirely over winter, roughly June to August, when colder water and fewer dolphin sightings make them less viable - confirm directly with an operator whether a winter departure is running before planning around one. The Giant's House garden and sculpture attraction keeps its own seasonal opening hours, shorter or closed on some winter days.
