Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve and Karatau
Kazakhstan'S Oldest Reserve (1926) And Part Of The UNESCO Western Tien Shan World Heritage Site (2016): Wild Tulip Slopes In April, The Aksu Canyon, Snow Leopard And Menzbier'S Marmot Habitat, And Aulie Hot Springs. · Zhabagly, Turkistan
Aksu-Zhabagly is Kazakhstan's oldest nature reserve, set up in 1926 in the western Tian Shan and the Karatau range, and part of the Western Tien-Shan UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 2016. It protects deep canyons, waterfalls, juniper slopes and high meadows, and it is the home of wild tulips that bloom in April, when the lower slopes turn red and yellow. Snow leopard, Menzbier's marmot, argali and brown bear live here, but you are very unlikely to see a snow leopard. Entry is controlled: a reserve permit and a guide are required, usually arranged through a guest house or the reserve office at Zhabagly village. Hiking season runs roughly April to October, with snow cutting higher routes the rest of the year. Nearby are the Karabastau petroglyphs and Aulie, in the wider reserve zone. Plan ahead: it is a long day from Shymkent, facilities are simple, and weather in the mountains turns fast.
Mountain reserve in the western Tian Shan, entered at Zhabagly village about 150 km north-east of Shymkent, with the Aksu Canyon, a waterfall and a guest house base for guided walks, Zhabagly, Turkistan, Kazakhstan
The reserve office and visitor area at Zhabagly keep ordinary daytime working hours, often closed at weekends or holidays, so permits are best arranged in advance through a guest house or tour operator. Walks are in daylight only, and guides decide start times by weather and route. The main season runs roughly April to October; higher routes close with snow, and in winter access is limited. The reserve is not free: a permit fee and often a guide fee are charged. Rules and prices change, so confirm everything before you travel.
