Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center

History Museum · Chamberlain, South Dakota

A museum of Lakota culture on the bluff above the Missouri River at Chamberlain, established in 1991 as a cultural and educational programme of St. Joseph's Indian School. Aktá Lakota means "to honour the people". It holds a substantial collection of Lakota art, artefacts and contemporary work, and it is free. The Dignity statue stands a few minutes away at the interstate rest area, and the two are usually visited together.

1301 North Main Street, Chamberlain, South Dakota, 57325, United States

Generally open Monday to Saturday with reduced or no Sunday hours, and a contracted winter schedule; closed major holidays. ⚠ ADMISSION IS FREE OR BY DONATION. It stands on the campus of St. Joseph's Indian School above the Missouri River at Chamberlain, directly off Interstate 90 - which makes it one of the easiest meaningful stops on a cross-state drive.
