Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Al Qal'A Of Beni Hammad (1980). The First Capital Of The Hammadid Dynasty, Founded 1007 And Destroyed In 1152, With The Minaret Of Its Great Mosque Still Standing To About 20 Metres And The Largest Surviving Medieval Islamic Palace Complex Ground Plan In The Maghreb · Maadid, M'Sila
Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad was the first capital of the Hammadid dynasty, founded in 1007 in a defensible fold of the Hodna mountains and abandoned after its destruction in 1152, which is most of why it survives today as a genuine, mostly unrestored ruin rather than a rebuilt monument. The minaret of its great mosque still stands to roughly twenty metres, visible from a distance across the site, and the ground plan around it is the largest surviving medieval Islamic palace complex layout anywhere in the Maghreb - courtyards, baths and reception halls laid out across a hillside with the mountains behind them. Almost nobody comes here relative to Algeria's other ruins, which is both the honest reason it sits at the floor of this batch and part of its real appeal: walking a UNESCO-inscribed medieval capital with the site entirely to yourself is not something many places in the Mediterranean world can still offer.
Ruined hilltop capital in the Hodna mountains, about 30 km north-east of M'Sila near the village of Maadid, Maadid, M'Sila, Algeria
Open through the daytime with no fixed modern schedule in the way a ticketed museum keeps one; a caretaker or ticket point, where staffed, generally follows ordinary daytime hours with a shorter winter day. There is no reliable vendor at the site and facilities are basic. The approach road from M'Sila via the village of Maadid is straightforward but rural, with no public transport running directly to the gate; a hired car or taxi from M'Sila is the normal way to arrive, and confirming current access with M'Sila accommodation before setting out is sensible given how little this site is visited.
