The Old Hill Of The Seljuk Sultanate Of Rum, With The Alaaddin Mosque Begun In The 12th Century And Finished In 1221, The Remains Of The Sultan'S Palace And A Pleasant Park Of Roses And Benches. A Calm Stop In The Middle Of Konya, Among Seljuk Architecture · Selcuklu, Konya

Alaaddin Hill is an ancient mound in the middle of Konya, once the citadel of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, and today a park of roses, benches and old trees crowned by the Alaaddin Mosque. The mosque was begun in the 12th century and completed in 1221 (confirm), and its dark, forest-like prayer hall of reused Roman and Byzantine columns holds the tombs of several Seljuk sultans. Beside it stand the ruins of the sultan palace, protected by a modern cover, and the base of the old walls that circled the hill. A rose garden, tea gardens and shaded paths make the hill a favourite place for local families, and a short walk or tram ride leads to the Mevlana Museum and the old bazaar. The mosque is a working place of worship, so visits are best outside prayer times and with modest dress. The park is open to the public without a ticket, and an hour is enough for a first look, with more time for the nearby Seljuk monuments and the museums.
