Alabaster Caverns State Park

Oklahoma State Park; World'S Largest Publicly Accessible Natural Gypsum Cave · Freedom, Oklahoma

A state park built around the largest natural gypsum cave in the world open to the public, and the only gypsum show cave in the United States, in the red-dirt canyon country of north-western Oklahoma. A guided walk of about three-quarters of a mile leads through a cavern cut by Cedar Creek through beds of alabaster, white and pink gypsum and rare black alabaster found in only a few places on earth. Tours leave promptly on the hour from 9 AM to 4 PM every day of the year, last about 45 minutes, are capped at thirty people and stay near 55°F. Five species of bat roost here, and a January 2024 census counted about 12,000 of them. Above ground, trails run through Cedar Canyon past four wild caves that experienced cavers may enter with a free permit, though no permits are issued from 1 October to 30 April while the bats hibernate. There is no parking pass at this park.
