Alaska Railroad
State Owned Railroad; Built By The Federal Government 1915 1923 · Anchorage, Alaska
A state-owned railway running about 470 miles from Seward through Anchorage and Denali to Fairbanks, built by the federal government between 1915 and 1923, when President Warren G. Harding drove the golden spike at Nenana. It is one of the last railways in the United States to offer flag-stop service, on which the Hurricane Turn train stops for anyone waving a flag in the backcountry north of Talkeetna. Summer trains carry visitors through roadless country: the Denali Star from Anchorage to Talkeetna, Denali and Fairbanks, the Coastal Classic along Turnagain Arm to Seward, and the Glacier Discovery to Whittier and Spencer Glacier. In 2026 the Denali Star ran northbound 13 May to 16 September and the Coastal Classic 15 May to 13 September, with peak fares from 1 June to 31 August. GoldStar glass-dome cars include meals.
