Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Nonprofit Wildlife Sanctuary · Portage, Alaska
A non-profit sanctuary on about 200 acres at the head of Turnagain Arm, an hour south of Anchorage, that takes in orphaned, injured and displaced Alaskan animals that cannot return to the wild. Visitors walk or drive a loop of about 1.5 miles past large natural enclosures holding brown and black bears, moose, musk oxen, elk, caribou, Sitka black-tailed deer, lynx, porcupines and foxes, with mountains all around. The centre is known for its wood bison programme: animals raised here were released in western Alaska in 2015, returning the species to the state after more than a century. In 2026 admission was $30 for adults and $24-$26 for ages 4-12. In summer it opened 8 AM to 8 PM, and at other times of year Friday to Monday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
