Ales Stenar and Ystad

Sweden'S Largest Stone Ship, 59 Standing Stones On A Clifftop Above The Baltic, Paired With The Medieval Town Of Ystad, Home Of The Wallander Crime Stories · Kaseberga, Skane County

Ales Stenar is a stone ship: 59 standing boulders set in the outline of a ship about 67 m long on the Kaseberga ridge, a grassy clifftop high above the Baltic on the south coast of Skane. It is the largest surviving stone ship in Sweden, with taller stones marking the stem and stern. Its age is debated. Radiocarbon dates from the site are often read as Late Iron Age, around 600 AD, which would make it a grave monument, but others argue it is older and that the stones align with the midsummer sunset and midwinter sunrise like a calendar; neither view is settled. Twenty kilometres to the west lies Ystad, a small medieval port of half-timbered houses, a Franciscan monastery and the church tower where a night watchman still blows a horn, and the home town of Henning Mankell's detective Kurt Wallander. People come for the wide sea view, the mystery of the stones, the smoked fish at Kaseberga harbour and the Wallander streets. The honest caveat: the site is small, exposed and often very windy, and in summer the path fills with day-trippers.

Ales Stenar is outdoors on open grazing land and is free and open at all times, all year; there is no ticket or gate. The walk up from the Kaseberga harbour car park is about 1 km, uphill on grass and gravel, and takes 15-20 minutes. The harbour cafes and smokehouses are open daily in summer and keep short hours or close in winter - check locally. In Ystad, the Greyfriars Monastery museum and the art museum are often closed on Mondays and keep shorter winter hours - check the current schedule. Getting there: Skanetrafiken trains reach Ystad from Malmo in roughly 50 minutes, and a Skanetrafiken bus runs from Ystad to Kaseberga, more often in summer - check the timetable. Nothing at the stones needs booking; guided walks and Wallander tours in Ystad are best booked a few days ahead in summer.
