Algonac State Park

Michigan State Park · Marine City, Michigan

Algonac State Park lies along River Road on the St. Clair River in southeast Michigan, north of the town of Algonac and south of Marine City. The St. Clair River is part of the main Great Lakes shipping channel linking Lake Huron to Lake St. Clair, so freighters, often hundreds of feet long, pass close to shore. That is the reason to come: a quiet riverfront park where you can sit with binoculars and watch ships go by. There is a campground, a few inland paths and fishing, but this is not a swimming park and there is no real beach. It suits campers, anglers, boat watchers and anyone who likes industrial and nautical scenes. It is small and quiet, so do not expect a beach resort. Detroit is about an hour away and Port Huron about 40 minutes (confirm). Allow two to four hours as a day stop or a night or two camping. A Recreation Passport is required; confirm facilities, trails and the campground layout.

Michigan state parks are commonly open daily from early morning until about ten at night, and Algonac is generally open all year, but exact gate hours, any winter closures and the dates when restrooms, water and the campground are available should be confirmed with the Michigan DNR. The campground has a season and a reservation system, and some parts may close in cold months. The ships do not follow a timetable: freighters pass at all hours in the shipping season, which runs roughly spring to winter, and traffic is lighter when ice builds. A Recreation Passport is required for the vehicle, and winter visits mean a cold, windy riverbank with little service.
