Alice Austen House
Historic House · Staten Island, New York
A small Victorian Gothic cottage on the Staten Island shore with ⚠ ONE OF THE BEST VIEWS OF THE NARROWS IN NEW YORK CITY — the home of ALICE AUSTEN, one of America's earliest and most prolific women photographers, who made some 8,000 images and ⚠ LIVED HERE WITH HER PARTNER GERTRUDE TATE FOR THIRTY YEARS. ⚠ IT IS A DESIGNATED NATIONAL SITE OF LGBTQ HISTORY.
2 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, New York, 10305, United States
⚠ THE LAWN AND THE VIEW ARE FREE, and the view is one of the best in New York City — straight across THE NARROWS to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge with lower Manhattan beyond. ⚠ IF THE HOUSE IS SHUT, THE TRIP IS STILL WORTH MAKING. Go late afternoon for the light. ⚠ CHECK THE OPENING DAYS BEFORE TRAVELLING — they are NARROW, this is a small organisation, and Staten Island is far enough that a wasted journey stings. ⚠ THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY IS FREE, passes the Statue of Liberty, and the house is a short bus or taxi ride south along the shore. ⚠ IT IS SMALL — an hour in the house, honestly — so combine it with Snug Harbor or Historic Richmond Town, both in this database. ⚠ RING AHEAD IF YOU HAVE ACCESS NEEDS; the grounds are level but the cottage has steps. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED.
