Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Reserve · Manteo, North Carolina

A hundred and fifty-two thousand acres of pocosin - a peat wetland peculiar to the south-east - on the mainland Albemarle Peninsula behind the Outer Banks, established in 1984. It is the place the red wolf was returned to the wild: captive-bred animals were released here in 1987, the first attempt anywhere to restore an extinct-in-the-wild carnivore to its range. The wolves are still here, and the population is very small and very precarious.
