Almaty Botanical Garden
Almaty'S Main Botanical Garden (Founded 1932), A Research And Display Garden Of Several Hundred Hectares With Trees From Across Eurasia, An Apple Tree Collection That Nods To Almaty'S Apple Origin Story, And A Kazakh Flora Section. · Almaty, Almaty
The Almaty Botanical Garden is a large green space on the southern edge of the city, founded in 1932 and spread over several hundred hectares at the foot of the Ili Alatau. It holds trees and shrubs from across Eurasia, an apple collection that nods to the city's name and its wild-apple story, and a section of Kazakh plants. It suits families, walkers, photographers and anyone who wants a quiet, shaded half day after the traffic and markets. Be honest about it: it is a pleasant city garden and an old research site, not a world-class collection, and some areas look worn or unkept. Paths are long, signs are patchy and English labels are rare. It is worth the trip in late April and May for blossom, or in October for colour. In mid-summer it is a cool, shady retreat, and in deep winter it is mostly bare. Pair it with Kok Tobe or the city museums rather than making it a main reason to come. Bring water.

The garden is usually open in daylight hours, with a gate or ticket office near the main entrance, but posted times and the closing time change with the season and may be shorter in winter. Some sections, glasshouses or research areas are closed to visitors or open only on certain days. Expect the gate to close before dusk. Opening days, last entry and the entry fee are not known here, so confirm them by phone, with your hotel or at the gate before you travel, especially outside the summer season.
