Alta Gracia Jesuit Estancia

Part Of The UNESCO World Heritage Site Jesuit Block And Estancias Of Cordoba (2000); A Jesuit Estancia Founded 1643, Now The Casa Del Virrey Liniers Museum · Alta Gracia, Cordoba

Alta Gracia is a hill town forty minutes south-west of Cordoba built around one of the Jesuit estancias that financed the Jesuit Block in the city. Founded in 1643, the estancia's church, residence and workshops stand around a courtyard beside the Tajamar, a stone reservoir the Jesuits dug for irrigation, and together they are part of the UNESCO listing of 2000. The residence is now a museum, the Casa del Virrey Liniers, named after the viceroy who later lived there, with furniture and displays about estancia life and the enslaved Africans whose labour ran it. The town has two other claims. Ernesto Guevara spent much of his childhood here, sent for the dry air to ease his asthma, and his family's house, Villa Beatriz, is a museum that draws visitors from around the world; it holds a replica of the motorcycle from his South American journey. And the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla spent his last years here; his house is also a museum. The town itself is a leafy resort in the Sierras de Cordoba.
