Altyn-Emel is a vast desert and mountain national park of about 5,000 square km, north of the Ili River and roughly 250 km north-east of Almaty. Its best-known sight is the Singing Dune, a sand ridge about 150 m high that can hum or boom when dry sand slides down its face. Be honest about this: the sound needs dry, still conditions and is not reliable, so some visitors hear a low drone and others only silence. The park also holds the pale Aktau mountains and the dark red Katutau hills, wild ass (kulan), Przewalski horses and old rock carvings. You cannot simply wander in. Entry needs a park permit at the checkpoint near Basshi, and the main sites are reached by 4WD with a ranger, usually arranged through a local operator or an Almaty tour. The Besshatyr Saka burial mounds lie nearby, and the road passes the Kapshagay reservoir. Summer is very hot, shade is scarce, and the drive from Almaty is long, so plan a full day or an overnight stay and confirm rules before you go.
