American Civil War Museum

History Museum · Richmond, Virginia

The museum formed in 2013 when the old Museum of the Confederacy merged with the American Civil War Center, and rebuilt in 2019 into the ruins of the Tredegar Iron Works on the James. It holds the largest collection of Confederate material anywhere — including the coat and sword Lee wore at Appomattox — and it tells the war from Union, Confederate and African American perspectives at the same time, which is the reason to come here rather than to any other Civil War museum.

480 Tredegar Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23219, United States

Tredegar site generally 10 AM - 5 PM daily, closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The White House of the Confederacy is guided-only at set times — check before travelling.
