American Jazz Museum
Specialty Museum · Kansas City, Missouri
A museum of American jazz in the 18th and Vine district, the neighbourhood that produced Kansas City jazz - Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Big Joe Turner - in the 1920s and 1930s, when Pendergast-era Kansas City ignored Prohibition and the clubs ran all night. It shares a building with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and holds Charlie Parker's plastic saxophone among its collection. The Blue Room inside is a working club with live music several nights a week, which is the part that makes the district feel alive rather than commemorated.
1616 East 18th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, 64108, United States
Generally 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday to Saturday and afternoons on Sunday, CLOSED MONDAYS. Closed major holidays. IT SHARES A BUILDING WITH THE NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL MUSEUM and the two sell a combination ticket. The Blue Room, the working jazz club inside, runs its own evening schedule.
