American Museum of Natural History
Natural History · New York, New York
Founded in 1869 and now more than forty permanent halls across four floors on the western edge of Central Park, holding roughly 34 million specimens of which a tiny fraction is on display. It is a working research institution with its own graduate school, and the reason its dioramas look the way they do is that they were painted from field expeditions the museum itself mounted.
