American Precision Museum
Specialty Museum · Windsor, Vermont
The 1846 Robbins & Lawrence Armory on Main Street in Windsor, a National Historic Landmark that holds the largest collection of historically significant machine tools in the United States. The claim the building makes for itself is larger than the collection: this is where interchangeable parts were first produced in an American factory, which is the beginning of mass production and of what the rest of the world came to call the American system of manufactures. The machines are laid out on the floor of the shop that made them matter, in a town of about three and a half thousand people, and almost nobody has heard of it.
196 Main Street, Windsor, Vermont, 05089, United States
Open YEAR ROUND but on two very different schedules, and this is the thing to check before travelling. ⚠ ROUGHLY 1 MAY TO 31 OCTOBER: DAILY, 10am to 5pm. ⚠ ROUGHLY 1 NOVEMBER TO 30 APRIL: WEEKDAYS ONLY, 10am to 4pm - a winter weekend visit will find it closed, which regularly catches people pairing it with a ski trip. A modest per-person admission; free parking on site and on the street. GUIDED TOURS AND DEMONSTRATIONS run on a published schedule, more often in the summer season, and are strongly worth catching because the machines do not explain their own significance. Groups and school parties are arranged in advance; phone 802-674-5781 before an out-of-season trip. ⚠ THE OLD CONSTITUTION HOUSE, 600 metres up the same street, is CLOSED FOR RENOVATION with reopening planned for about May 2027 - do not plan the two together yet.
