American Visionary Art Museum
Art Museum · Baltimore, Maryland
A museum at the foot of Federal Hill devoted entirely to art made by people with no training and no art world — farmers, mechanics, prisoners, the mentally ill, the obsessed. Congress designated it the national museum for this kind of work, and it shows one enormous thematic exhibition a year rather than a permanent hang, so a return visit two years later is a different museum. The building is covered in broken mirror and mosaic and there is a fifty-five-foot whirligig in the plaza outside.
800 Key Highway, Baltimore, Maryland, 21230, United States
Generally open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 10 AM to 5 PM, and CLOSED MONDAYS and on major holidays. ⚠ THE MUSEUM SHOWS ONE THEMATIC EXHIBITION A YEAR, replaced entirely at the changeover with a short closure between shows and NO PERMANENT COLLECTION ON VIEW — check what is on and that it is not between exhibitions before travelling. The plaza, whirligig and mosaic exterior are free and always visible. On-site parking.
