Amphawa Floating Market

Weekend Canal Market Popular With Thai Visitors; The Maeklong Railway Market Is Nearby · Amphawa, Samut Songkhram

Amphawa Floating Market is a canal-side market in the small town of Amphawa in Samut Songkhram, the smallest province in Thailand, about 80 kilometres southwest of Bangkok near the mouth of the Maeklong river. Unlike markets run mainly for foreign tour groups, Amphawa is popular above all with Thai visitors, who come on weekend afternoons and evenings to walk the wooden shophouses lining both banks of the canal, eat grilled seafood cooked on boats moored at the steps, and buy sweets, coconut products and souvenirs. As dusk falls, boats take visitors out along the river to see fireflies blinking in the riverside trees, though there are fewer than there once were. Many visitors stay overnight in canal-side homestays. The area is closely tied to King Rama II, born here, and the memorial park in his honour lies just outside town. Nearby are the Maeklong Railway Market, where stalls fold back as the train passes, the shellfish beach of Don Hoi Lot, coconut sugar farms and the morning floating market of Damnoen Saduak.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the market runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from about 3 or 4 pm to about 8 or 9 pm, and is largely closed Monday to Thursday apart from a few cafes and homestays; public holidays may add extra market days. Firefly boats run from dusk, roughly 6 or 7 pm, with the last boats around 8 or 9 pm. The Maeklong Railway Market spectacle happens only when a train is scheduled, several times a day, and the line has been closed for long periods for works. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a weekday to find the market shut, coming in the morning when nothing is open, planning around a train that is suspended, the last minivan to Bangkok leaving before the market ends, and a moonlit night with few fireflies. Confirm current times before relying on them.
