Anak Krakatau
The Island That Grew Out Of The Caldera Left By The 1883 Krakatoa Eruption, One Of The Most Violent In Recorded History; Its 2018 Flank Collapse Caused A Tsunami That Killed Over Four Hundred People · Kalianda, Lampung
IN 1883 KRAKATOA DESTROYED ITSELF. The eruption was one of the most violent in recorded history, THE SOUND WAS HEARD NEARLY FIVE THOUSAND KILOMETRES AWAY - still among the loudest noises ever recorded - and the tsunamis it generated killed somewhere around THIRTY-SIX THOUSAND PEOPLE around the Sunda Strait. The island collapsed into a caldera under the sea. IN 1927 A NEW CONE BROKE THE SURFACE inside it and has been growing ever since: ANAK KRAKATAU, the child of Krakatoa, a black cinder island rising out of blue water. IN DECEMBER 2018 ITS WESTERN FLANK COLLAPSED INTO THE SEA and sent a tsunami into Java and Sumatra with no warning at all, KILLING MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED PEOPLE. The volcano lost roughly two thirds of its height in a single night. There was no earthquake, so there was no tsunami warning, and that is why the rules about landing here are what they are, and why they change without much notice at all.
Krakatoa archipelago, Sunda Strait, Lampung, Kalianda, Lampung, Indonesia
REACHED BY BOAT ONLY, from CARITA OR ANYER in Banten on the Java side, or from KALIANDA in LAMPUNG on the Sumatra side - a crossing of two to four hours depending on the port and the boat. TRIPS ARE ARRANGED THROUGH OPERATORS and are usually day trips or one-night camping trips on nearby RAKATA or Legon Cabe. LANDING ON ANAK KRAKATAU IS PERIODICALLY BANNED and the permitted approach distance changes with the alert level - after the 2018 collapse the island was closed entirely for a long period, and climbing to the active cone has been prohibited for years at a time. CONFIRM THE CURRENT STATUS BEFORE BOOKING ANYTHING. CROSSINGS ARE CANCELLED IN ROUGH SEAS, which is common outside the calmer months. There is no infrastructure of any kind on the islands.
