Anchorage Museum
Municipal Museum Operated By A Nonprofit Association · Anchorage, Alaska
The largest museum in Alaska, in downtown Anchorage, opened in 1968 and expanded several times, covering the art, history, science and cultures of Alaska and the circumpolar North. Its Alaska Exhibition traces the state from Indigenous homelands through Russian America, the gold rushes, the 1964 earthquake and the oil era. The Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center displays hundreds of Alaska Native objects on long-term loan from the Smithsonian, shown with the knowledge of Native advisers. Art galleries show landscape painting and contemporary Northern artists, and the Discovery Center and planetarium engage children. The museum hosts free evening admission on the first Friday of each month and discounted entry on third Thursdays in winter.
