Ancient City (Muang Boran)
Open Air Museum Of Full Size And Scaled Replicas Of Thai Monuments And Palaces, Opened In 1972 By Lek Viriyaphant; The Erawan Museum Nearby Is By The Same Founder · Samut Prakan, Samut Prakan
The Ancient City, Muang Boran in Thai, is a vast open-air museum on the southern edge of greater Bangkok in Samut Prakan, where the country's great temples, palaces and landmarks stand in full-size or scaled-down replica across grounds laid out roughly in the shape of Thailand itself, so that northern buildings sit at the northern end and southern ones in the south. It was created by the businessman and art patron Lek Viriyaphant and opened in 1972, and it now holds well over a hundred structures among lakes, canals, lawns and gardens, from a reconstruction of the Ayutthaya throne hall of Sanphet Prasat, destroyed in 1767, to a replica of the Khmer temple of Khao Phra Wihan on an artificial hill, stilted wooden houses and a small floating market. The park is far too big to walk, so visitors rent bicycles or golf carts or ride the tram, ideally in the cooler late afternoon. The same founder built the giant three-headed elephant of the Erawan Museum a short ride away and the carved wooden Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the Ancient City has opened every day of the year, with no weekly closing day, from about 9 am to about 7 pm, with ticket sales stopping around an hour before closing; golf-cart rental and the tram stop earlier than the grounds, and some buildings and shops close by late afternoon. Evening openings and events have run at times. The Erawan Museum has opened daily from about 9 am to about 6 or 7 pm. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at noon in the hot season, trying to see it on foot, reaching the gate after the last ticket, finding the golf carts already handed in, and sitting in Sukhumvit traffic at rush hour instead of taking the BTS. Confirm current times before relying on them.
