Ancient Spanish Monastery

Monastery · North Miami Beach, Florida

A Cistercian monastery built in Segovia in the 1140s, bought by William Randolph Hearst in 1925, dismantled stone by stone into eleven thousand crates and shipped to New York — where US customs quarantined it over foot-and-mouth disease, opened the crates and repacked the stones in the wrong boxes. It sat in a Brooklyn warehouse for twenty-six years before being reassembled here in the 1950s, as a jigsaw with no picture.
