Anderson Japanese Gardens
Japanese Garden · Rockford, Illinois
Twelve acres of Japanese garden on the edge of Rockford, begun in 1978 when the businessman John Anderson came back from Portland's Japanese Garden and asked the designer Hoichi Kurisu to build one in his back garden. Kurisu kept working on it for decades. It is repeatedly ranked at or near the top of North American Japanese gardens, which is not what anyone expects to find in northern Illinois.
