Andersonville National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Andersonville, Georgia
The site of Camp Sumter, the Confederate prison where some forty-five thousand Union soldiers were held in fourteen months from February 1864, and where around thirteen thousand of them died of disease, exposure and starvation in an open stockade with no shelter and one polluted creek. The commandant was tried and hanged after the war, one of very few people executed for what would now be called war crimes. The site also holds the National Prisoner of War Museum, the only museum in the country devoted to all American prisoners of war, and a national cemetery that is still in use.
