Angel Island Immigration Station
Historic Site · Tiburon, California
Often called the Ellis Island of the West, though the comparison misleads — this station was built to exclude rather than admit. Under the Chinese Exclusion Act, arrivals from Asia were held here for weeks, months and sometimes years while their claims were tested. More than two hundred Chinese poems remain carved into the barrack walls, found by a park ranger in 1970 who stopped the buildings being demolished.
