Angel Island State Park
State Park · Tiburon, California
Angel Island is the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, a state park reached only by boat, usually the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry, with seasonal service from San Francisco (confirm the schedule). It combines big views, a paved perimeter road of roughly 5 miles, a summit at Mount Livermore, Civil War-era Camp Reynolds and the Immigration Station, often called the Ellis Island of the West. From 1910 to 1940 it processed Chinese and other Asian immigrants under harsh exclusion laws, and poems carved into the barracks walls remain the most moving thing on the island. The day is easy to plan but unforgiving: the last ferry matters, food is limited, and the wind is cold. It suits walkers, cyclists, families and history fans. Bring everything you need, confirm the ferry times, tour times and fees before you go, and do not miss the Immigration Station, the real reason to cross, which takes about an hour.
SF Bay (Access by Ferry), Tiburon, California, 94920, United States
The park is open daily during daylight, commonly from about 8 a.m. until sunset, but your real hours are the ferry's. Ferries from Tiburon run most days with a reduced winter schedule, and San Francisco service is seasonal - confirm both on the operator's schedule and plan your return around the last boat. Immigration Station tours and museum hours are separate and shorter, often limited to weekends or set days in the cooler months, and some tours need advance booking. The cafe at the main cove keeps seasonal hours, and bike rentals and the tram run mostly in warm months. Storms and fog can delay or cancel a ferry, so check the operator before you leave home.
