Angel Mounds State Historic Site

Archaeological · Evansville, Indiana

A Mississippian town on the Ohio River east of Evansville, occupied from roughly 1100 to 1450 and home to as many as a few thousand people at its height. Eleven earthen mounds survive, including a large platform mound that carried the principal structure, within what was a stockaded town covering about a hundred acres. It is a National Historic Landmark and one of the best-preserved Mississippian sites in North America, largely because it was bought for preservation in the 1930s before it could be ploughed out.
