Angel Oak
Nature Preserve · Johns Island, South Carolina
A southern live oak on Johns Island, estimated at four to five hundred years old, sixty-six and a half feet tall with a trunk twenty-eight feet around and a longest limb stretching a hundred and eighty-seven feet. Its canopy shades more than seventeen thousand square feet. Several of its branches are so heavy they rest on the ground and run back up again. It costs nothing, it takes ten minutes, and it is one of very few free things in the Charleston area that people talk about years later.
